Shaving tips from Clinique

electric razors Scruffing Lotion can be used as an electric pre-shave. Soak cotton, scrub over face. Then shave.

ingrown hairs Prior to shaving, prep with Face Scrub to free ingrown hairs, help prevent new ones from forming.

post-shave irritation Post-Shave Healer patted on skin after shaving. Helps heal irritated skin. Helps alleviate redness. Encourages healing of minor nicks and cuts. Then apply Chemistry After Shave.

shaving tip 1 Wash with Face Soap to remove surface oil so water can penetrate facial hair.

shaving tip 2 Depending on your skin type and formula preference, apply Cream Shave (drier skins) or oil-free M Shave Aloe Gel (oilier skins) against the grain to maximize lift

shaving tip 3 Shave with light, short strokes in the direction of hair growth. Shaving with the grain helps prevent ingrown hairs, razor burn, and cuts. Instead of shaving against the grain to get a close shave, shave twice.

shaving tip 4 Shave smooth areas (cheeks) first, saving the chin and upper lip (which have the highest concentration of tough hairs) for last, so these whiskers have longer to soften. Shave from the base of the neck up to the jaw, then back down again, since neck hair grows in both directions.

shaving tip 5 Pay special attention to sideburns: right-handed men tend to shave their left sideburn shorter--vice versa for lefties. (Strange, but true.)

smart-shave Never shave against the grain: Can trigger ingrown hairs, razor burn. If ingrown hairs are a problem, help them with Face Scrub. A floating-blade razor won't disturb shaving bumps. For extra glide: Slather on M Lotion and let set before applying Cream Shave.

tough beards shave in or after shower to allow steam and moderately hot water to soften beard. Always use a sharp, clean razor. Change blades after every third use. Rinse often with hot water to prevent razor clogging.

dry body skin Clinique's Body Scrub clears skin of dead cell debris, smooths rough patches. Cuts down on flaking and itching associated with dry, colder weather. Use on wet skin in shower. Massage in, then rinse off. Great early morning invigorating scrub.

exercise and the skin Skin can always use a drink after excercise as perspiration clears skin of moisture. Put a small bottle of M Lotion in your gear bag.

golfing Walking the course or breaking par, grab a hat with a 3-inch brim to shade cheeks, ears, neck from sun. Don't forget the sun block.

overcast skies Watch out: Haze and clouds don't block damaging, UV rays. So if you're watching centre court at Wimbledon, or hitting a few at the local courts, always wear UV protecting sunglasses, and make sure your sunscreen stays put. Try Full-Service Sun Block SPF 20.

skiing, climbing Skiers, climbers--beware: High altitudes mean thinner air, less atmospheric protection, and sun reflected by snow. Serious sun care is needed, even when in the clouds. Our advice: Total Cover Sun Block SPF 30, applied frequently helps to avoid sunburns and sun damage.

sunscreen application Sun smarts: Start each season using a sun block with the highest appropriate SPF level. Shift to lower gear after several days. Slather on your sunscreen 30 minutes before sunning.

swimming, scuba Even submerged in water, the sun's UV rays can get you. Your waterproof solution: Easy-to-use spray-on Oil-Free Sun Block SPF 15. Reapply frequently, and after every towel-drying.
